April Mendyka is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). She earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Michigan State University and her Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Central Michigan University.
April participated in Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Children's Trauma Initiative for 16 months and was trained and supervised in the implementation of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). She has been implementing the TF-CBT model with children and adolescents since April 2018 and earned her national certification in August 2019. April has also been trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Both TF-CBT and EMDR are evidence-based interventions that address the emotional and behavioral difficulties associated with traumatic stress. Though trauma can be an incredibly difficult and uncomfortable topic to discuss, the flexibility of these models allows April to use her creativity to introduce therapeutic activities that empower her clients to confront their traumas. April has a knack for making others feel comfortable and strives to foster a therapeutic alliance that allows clients to develop into their greatest selves.
April has experience working with Macomb County Community Mental Health (MCCMH) and has served children, adolescents, and adults with severe mental illness. April enjoys working with individuals of all ages and has a passion for working with children and adolescents. Her areas of professional interest include anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, grief and loss, and ADHD.
April currently accepts most insurance plans, private pay, and sliding scales. She has weekend availability.
