James M. Riggio, Ph.D., PC

Dr. Riggio has met stringent practice standards and criteria to be deemed
a specialist in the following areas: Alcohol/Substance Abuse and
Dual Diagnosis.
Dr. Riggio received both his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Clinical
Psychology from the University of Detroit (Detroit, Michigan) in 1985 and
1988, respectively. With over 26 years of professional experience working in
the metropolitan-Detroit area, Dr. Riggio is highly respected as a clinician and educator.
His areas of expertise and interest include individual psychodynamic psychotherapy,
trauma-related reactions, relationship issues, and addictions. Dr. Riggio is
presently full-time employed at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center (Detroit), and has also
taught courses in Psychology at Oakland County Community College and the University of
Detroit-Mercy. He conducts individual and couples counseling/psychotherapy, and has
worked extensively with both urban and inner-city populations, offering services to the
chronically mentally ill, homeless veterans, alcohol- and drug-dependent individuals, and those
suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar illness, clinical depression and
anxiety, and many other psychiatric disorders.
Dr. Riggio has also worked as a consultant to the Oakland County Circuit Court—
Psychological Clinic, conducting psychological evaluations on juvenile offenders, and is a
certified Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mediator. He provides clinical supervision for
Doctoral students at the VA Medical Center, as well as psychologists within the general
community. In addition to traditional psychotherapeutic approaches, Dr. Riggio also utilizes
several other evidenced-based treatment techniques, including motivational interviewing,
cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
As a dedicated, ethical, and compassionate psychologist and instructor, Dr. Riggio values
helping others to discover what is most important to one’s true self. By utilizing the
therapeutic relationship, Dr. Riggio aims to help his clients increase their sense of awareness
and well-being through dignity, respect, and empathic communication.
